Like etter at man har forlatt Haugastøl, begynner veien å stige oppover mot Varden og et
fjellvann som heter Ørteren. Dette vannet ble i sin tid demmet opp for å gi elektrisk energi til området og i prosessen steg jo vannstanden og forente seg med 2 andre vann i området. Tilsammen dekker Ørteren nå en flate tilsvarende ca 10,5 kv.km!

Just after leaving Haugastoel, the road begins to ascend towards Varden and a mountain lake called Oerteren. This lake was in its time dammed up to provide electrical energy to the area and in the process, the water level rose and merged with 2 other lakes in the area. Together, Ørteren now covers an area corresponding to approximately 10.5 sq.km!

i noen grad forstyrrer helhetsinntrykket, men jeg valgte å ta det med likevel!

It does not! But we have had a rather warm summer. The day I shot this scene, the air temperature was above 23 C and mountain lakes are usually not too deep. I did not test it, but it would not have surprised me if it had been around 17-18 deg C that day.

Is the water in the lake cold or warm enough for swimming?

Ho ho, Vicki, that depends entirely on your personal guts! This summer we have had some really warm days! The week when I was up there, temperatures were in the range of 20-25 degrees plus and I would venture a guess that this lake held something like 15-16 degrees? In a normal mountain summers, however. I guess 10 – 12 would be closer to the truth? Please remember that we have something called ‘night’ and when the sun is 100% absent. Night temperatures – even through summer, may fall to 5 – 8 degrees in the air.
In late August you could be encountering snow, but that would still be abnormal.
It depends on the height, of course, and here at Lake Oerteren we are at approximately
3200 feet!

Looking closer, I understand what has happened to the picture. The reflections you see in the water are not from the hill directly behind, but originates from the mountain peaks on the horizon! And that is where the haze is! (Didn’t realize that at first glance!)

Even with the haze it looks great, it looks so fresh and clean there. ( Probably because it is….. can’t compare that to polluted London)
