Modum – Geithus S

Originally Geithus is an industrial center in the municipality of Modum, but through the years industry have been closed down due to competition, new production methods and what more, and on the new throughway todays traffic are passing in speeds close to
60 mph on the bridge crossing the river and – over most of Geithus.
I’m probably in ‘good company’ when I confess that I’d nearly forgotten all about Geithus? So perhaps it would be a good idea to make a new visit?
It’s been difficult to find the population at Geithus. All published figures include the neighbouring area of Aamot and this total is 6266 people. It may be safe to expect the population of ‘Geithus’ near 3000 people.

And here we are! Firstly we wanted to find out whether there was som industry still active?
So we aimed at the old industrail center named ‘Katfoss’. But – our first impression was that this had become more of a residental area?

But it loks like the spring has beaten us to the punch? In a week there won’t be much visible here, but it’s gonna take some time before the grass will succeed penetrating dead weed from last year?
Å, – jovisst er her industri! . .

But of course, there were indstry here. At any rate a so called ‘industrial park’, but to be quite honest, somewhat worse for wear. And there was a sign proclaiming that there were
some petroglyphs to be found in the neighbourhood!  That exited us, but firstly we wanted to have a look at the park . . .
Ingen biler? Ingen gardiner? Ser helt forlatt ut?
No cars? No curtains? Looking rather deserted?

A bit further down into the park it seemed like someone was running a business?

And it may be ‘life’ in other places, but probably somewhat limited . . . 🙂

The signs pointing to the petroglyphs marked a path leading into the forest, and suddenøy we found ourselves on the banks of the ‘Snarum River’, but petroglyphs we did not find!
Later we have been told that we practically must have been standing on them, but if the intentions have been to display them, the job og marking them is extremely bad!

Markings indicated that this would be a place to try our luck with a fishing rod, but since we were only fitted with camera equipment, we really didn’t follow through on this.

But we got a very solid impression of the motorway bridge as well as the railway bridge.

It dawned on me pretty fast that there wasn’t much of special interest to be seen at Geithus, but people were ‘living’ there! Pretty quick I got the distinct impression that people might work within adjoining areas, settlements or cities, but they were living
at peacful Geithus.

Eventually I got the impression that it had once been many old houses here, but that
today there was significant expansions done to many. I.e. that people had decided that here they would stay as long as possible? The impression was strengthened by the fact that there were a great deal of houses that obviously had been built during recent years?
A professional wood carver, or a man with a dear hobby?

Suddenly we came across a small field or park which was obviously marked for atletic
training for the younger among us.
Her fødes fremtidige ‘Maradonas’ eller Messi’s hver eneste uke . . .🙂
Here future ‘Maradona’s or Messi’s are born practically every week!🙂

.

.

At times we came across details that made us think about different times and environments . . .
Langs vannet vokste det ville tulipaner –
Along the waterfront grew wild tulips –
Oooops!  Unnskyld hr. . .
Ooops!  Excuse, Mr Goose, we had no intensions about disturbing your family life . . .

Mot hovedveien gjennom Geithus ligger bl.a. Stalberg skole
Towards the main street through Geithus lies the ‘Stalsberg School –

.
By this beautiful house, we discovered a curious detail:

Here we found a tree which undoubtedly is a yew? And it has been here for quite a while! But please observe what’s growing up all around it?  Undobtedly maples!

And suddenly we’re back at the old bridge. If we decide to cross over, we’ll be in
Geithus North, but that’s gonna be another report.
(Compliments of SRB)

Please return me to INDEX for a new destination,

Tranquility at its best. I would love to love in a little town like this – so beautiful and quiet.

    • Seenorway says:

      Hi Hester,
It’s not even a ‘town’; – more like a settlement. and in ‘Geithus’ (North), I’d be very surprised if the population exceeded 1200?

  2. Seenorway says:

Yes it really does! It was an industrial site up into the mid 70’thies, but not any more!

  3. C.E.Robinson says:

Svein, nice trip around quite a pretty area. The houses gave a different, stately design! Lack of industry helps to keep the rural look. 💛 Elizabeth
