The Bumblebee Fly

(Bombylius major)

You may think I’ve gone batty in my old days, but there is actually a creature qualifying to the name ‘Bumblebee fly’ So what is it? A bumblebee or a fly?  Actually it’s a fly that has got the notion that his existence would be less dangerous if everybody believed him to be a bumblebee! It carries the impressive latin handle ‘Bombylius major’

And a funny creature he really is! He may remain poised in the air directly over a flower, or he’s balancing on legs three times longer than usual. Then his trunk must also be a lot longer than usual!
And he’s fury all over the body, just like a bumblebee! I think ‘scruffy’ may be a good description?

But he’s quite harmless and a funny little carachter to photograph!

  1. Too many times we don’t have the opportunity or take the time to stop to see nature up close in all her beauty. Your photos have reminded me to better appreciate the incredible designs of nature.

Thank you, Gerard, and what you say is so true! Why don’t we? Just to settle down beside some flowers and take the time to become a part of nature ourselves?
In 10-15 minutes things suddenly starts to happen. The butterflies return. You represent no danger . . . And of course, you need to have your camera handy ? 🙂
