The ‘Blue-wing’

In Norway we have a specie of butterlies that goes under the name ‘Blue-wings’. Most people look upon these butterflies as ‘one of the same’, but in fact there are at least 10-12 different kinds within the same family. And some of them are so rare tht they figure on the list of endangered species.

And when people observe this charming little butterfly, most people don’t think of ‘blue-wings’ at all, but it is! They are usually blueish, lilac-blue or lilac brown on the overside, but on the undersides they are decorated as ‘mother of pearl’.
Otherwise it’s not a very large creature. Very tiny indeed. From wing tip to wing tip only 28-34 mm!
