Numedal – Flesberg

Numedal is a beautiful valley stretching from the city of ‘Kongsberg’ through several communities to Uvdal and the ‘Hardanger plains’:  Flesberg, Rollag and Nore & Uvdal.
Through all of them run the river ‘Numedalslågen’, which is the third largest river in Norway 234 miles long. How this river rate on a national scale depends whether you look at the total length, the total mass of water carried or the total downfall area that it covers.

In the community of Flesberg the population as of today is close to 2620 people. Not very large, but it’s a community that steadily increases its population.

In the southern part of this community we find ‘Grette bridge’

In flesberg the main revenue comes from forestry and agriculture, but there is also some tourism in the valley due to areas ofr leisure activities.

Here we find the ‘Lampeland Hotel’ strategically located in the middel of the valley.

Picture 480Og Flesberg kirke!

And Flesberg church! There is an uncertainty as to when this church was actually built.
One think that it might have been erected as a stave church in the last part of the 1100 or possibly in the earli part of the 1200.
A large renovation was made in 1735 which more or less converted the original church to a so called ‘cross church’, but I think you’ll find it worth a small stop if you are ever visiting these parts of Norway.

The next stop up the valley is the community of Rollag, but that’s gonna be a new report.

Hi, my great gr.gr.grandfather came from, I think it’s, Kallerudhaugen Flesberg Numedal. His name was Knut Christian Anderson. He was born in Aug.1844. Do you know of any way of finding out who his parents were. Thank you

      Hi Nancy,

There are organizations specializing in ‘heritage’ which could probably give you a hand. The problem being that they usually specialize within a certain geographical area.
Another possibility is the local church. They might be able to read something out of their church books provided the individuals haven’t mov ed in or out of the region.
I’ll make a few local searches for you. If I find anything, I’ll return to you by mail.
